Root Cause: If using Oracle Business Intelligence as a data store, BI Publisher establishes system communication with it as BISystemUser. If you change the BISystemUser password in the identity store administrative interface, you also must change the password in the credential store (oracle.bi.system credential map). This applies if you have created a custom application role to take the place of the default BISystemUser. Components will be unable to communicate with each other if the credentials are out-of-sync.

Root Cause One Liner : BISystemUser Credentials Become Out-of Sync.

Resolution: Resetting the BISystemUser Password.

From Fusion Middleware Control target navigation pane, expand the farm, then expand WebLogic Domain, and select bifoundation_domain.
  • From the WebLogic Domain menu, select Security, then Credentials.
  • Open the oracle.bi.system credential map, select system.user and click Edit.
    This screenshot or diagram is described in surrounding text.

  • In the Edit Key dialog, enter BISystemUser (or name you selected) in the User Name field. In the Password field, enter the trusted user's password that is contained in the authentication provider (for example, Oracle Internet Directory, Active Directory).

OBIEE 11G Object Pruning Utility

If you have a large number of extraneous or unwanted objects in your repository, you can delete the unwanted objects using the prunerpd command-line utility.

Before running prunerpd, you must first run bi-init.cmd (or bi-init.sh on UNIX systems) to launch a command prompt that is initialized to your Oracle instance. You can find this utility in:
ORACLE_INSTANCE/bifoundation/OracleBIApplication/coreapplication/setup

OBIEE 11g Administration link is missing

I am Unable to see ‘Administration’ link or dashboards in Analytics using weblogic user in OBIEE 11g after upgrade from 10g to 11g 

Solution:
If you encounter such a problem then following are steps to resolve the issue.
Step-1:
Login to Analytics
http://localhost:9704/analytics
Step-2:
Manually change URL by replacing the last word “bieehome” with “Managegroups”, as shown below
Original URL:
http://localhost:9704/analytics/saw.dll?bieehome
After changing:
http://localhost:9704/analytics/saw.dll?Managegroups
Once you open modified URL, you will see below page
Search “Presentation Server Administrators” group and then select to edit,
You will see below window appear at the right side of the screen,
Add weblogic user to the Administrators application role by performing actions # 1,2,3,4,5 as show in above image.
Log out and log back in with the weblogic user.
You should now be able to see the “Administration” link at the top right, and also the dashboards by clicking or mousing-over the Dashboards link/dropdown.

Enable BI Mobile App Designer in BI Presentation Services

Enable BI Mobile App Designer in the BI Presentation Services user interface by updating the BI Presentation Services instanceconfig.xml file.
  1. Open the configuration file instanceconfig.xml for editing. You can find instanceconfig.xml at:
    ORACLE_INSTANCE\config\OracleBIPresentationServicesComponent\coreapplication_obipsn
    For example:

Implicit Fact Column

  • The Implicit fact column is added to a query when it contains columns from two or more dimension tables and no measures. The column is not visible in the results. It is used to specify a default join path between dimension tables when there are several possible alternatives or contexts.
  • The implicit fact column must be based on the same fact around which the presentation catalog has been built. For example, if the presentation catalog contains information from the Order star, the implicit fact column must be based on the Order/Order-Item fact.
For example, if the ROW_WID column in the fact table is the primary key of that table, then the implicit fact column is a Count (ROW_WID).

Migrate 10g RPD to 11g using command prompt


When you try to open a 10G RPD using 11G Admin Tool will see the following message, Saying you to upgrade the RPD using upgrade utility. Below is the process to upgrade the RPD.

 
Run bi-init.cmd (or bi-init.sh on UNIX) to launch a command prompt or shell window that is initialized to your Oracle instance. You can find this utility in:

    ORACLE_INSTANCE/bifoundation/OracleBIApplication/coreapplication/setup



    Run obieerpdmigrateutil from the resulting shell window with the desired options, as follows:

    obieerpdmigrateutil -I input_repository_path -O output_repository_path -L ldif_output_path -U 10g_administrator_username

    Where:
    input_repository_path is the name and location of the RPD you want to upgrade and encrypt.
    output_repository_path is the name and location of the upgraded and encrypted RPD. This value can be the same as the input repository path.
    ldif_output_path is the path of the LDIF output file generated by the utility. It contains the users and groups from the old RPD for importing into your LDAP Identity Store.
    10g_administrator_username is the Administrator user name for the repository in the previous release.
    For example:
    obieerpdmigrateutil -I C:\mud_dir\my_repos.001 -O C:\upgr\my_repos.001 -L C:\upgr\ldif\my_ldif.ldif -U Administrator

    When prompted, enter the 10g administrator password and a new repository encryption password. Do not forget the repository password, because you cannot open the repository without it. To avoid errors, use the same repository password for all repository files in your MUD environment.

Script to Purge Cache in OBIEE

This script would help you to clear the cache in OBIEE Environment.

Edit the Environmental variables as per your environment and run the script.

I have created a text file Purgecache.txt (E:\OBIEE_11G\Cache\Purgecache.txt), that would clear all the bi server cache.

OBIEE 11G server unable to start

Today i did faced a wierd issue where my Bi services are not starting 

 <Notice> <WebLogicServer> <BEA-000365> <Server state changed to FAILED>
 <Error> <WebLogicServer> <BEA-000383> <A criticalservice failed. The server will shut itself down>
 <Notice> <WebLogicServer> <BEA-000365> <Server state changed to FORCE_SHUTTING_DOWN>

looking furthur into the logs i did find one warning:


WARNING: Key store file integrity checker initialization failed. Reason oracle.s
ecurity.jps.service.keystore.KeyStoreServiceException: JPS-01050: Opening of wal
let based credential store failed. Reason java.io.IOException: C:\Oracle\Middlew
are\user_projects\domains\bifoundation_domain\config\fmwconfig\bootstrap\cwallet
.sso (Access is denied).


Solution:
Once i grant the acess to the key store file cwallet.sso , now i am able to start the bi services.
You can find the file in the location specified:

<FUSION_MIDDLEWAREHOME>\user_projects\domains\<USER_DOMAIN>\config\fmwconfig\bootstrap\cwallet.sso

Root Cause Analysis:

I was trying to start the BI Services with the newly created user. This user must have access/ rights to all middle ware home. 

Performing OBIEE 11G Patch Merges


Oracle Business Intelligence provides the capability of generating an XML patch file that contains only the changes made to a repository. This patch can be then applied to the old (original) version of the repository to create the new version.

Creating the Patch:

To generate a patch using the Administration Tool:
Step 1:  In the Administration Tool, open the current Oracle BI repository in offline mode. In other words, open the updated repository that contains the changes you want to put in the patch.
Step 2: Select File, then select Compare.
Step 3: Select the original Oracle BI repository. Select Repository from the submenu to select a binary repository file in RPD format, or select XML to select a set of MDS XML documents.
Step 4: In the Open Offline dialog, enter the repository password and click OK.
Step 5a(optional): It is a good practice to equalize your changes to clean up underlying object IDs before generating a patch.
Step 5b: In the Compare repositories dialog, review the changes between the repositories. Then, click Create Patch. In the Create Patch dialog, enter a name for the patch file (for example, my_patch.xml) and click Save.

Applying a Repository Patch:

Step 1:In the Administration Tool, open the modified Oracle BI repository in offline mode. In other words, open the repository on which you want to apply the patch.
Step 2:Select File, then select Merge. The Merge Repository Wizard appears. For Merge Type, select Patch Repository Merge.
Step 3: Select the original parent repository by clicking Select next to Original Master Repository. Select Repository from the submenu to select a binary repository file in RPD format, or select XML to select a set of MDS XML documents.
Step 4:Enter the repository password for the original repository.
Step 5: Click Select next to Patch File. Browse to select the patch file you want to apply, then click Open. The patch file must be in XML format. Please make sure patch file password is the same as the password for the current repository.
Step 6: Click Finish.

Oracle BI Web Services Licensing and Permissions

Oracle BI Web Services is available to licensed users of Oracle Business Intelligence. The installer
generates the appropriate licensing entries in the analyticsweblicense.xml file based on the
installation key. If you get a gNot Licensedh error when making an Oracle BI Web Services method,
then check that you used the correct key at installation.

The licensing entries in the analyticsweblicense.xml file are:

kmsgLicenseSOAPAccess. This entry enables the SOAP interfaces.
kmsgLicenseOfficeIntegration. This entry enables integration with Microsoft Excel.

The Access Soap permission is granted to all users by default. If you explicitly deny this permission
to a user, then Oracle BI throws an "Access Denied" exception for Oracle BI Web Services methods
that require authentication (examples: logon and logonex).

OBIEE enable logging at Presentation Level


Some times you might want to diagnose performance or data issues by setting a temporary loglevel for a query. You can enable query logging for a select statement by adding aprefix clause in the Advanced SQL Clauses section of the Advanced tab in Oracle BIPresentation Services.

For example, for the select statement:

SELECT year, product, sum(revenue) FROM time, products, facts; You can specify the logging level of 5 in the Prefix field as follows:

Set Variable LOGLEVEL=5;

For this query, the logging level of 5 is used regardless of the value of the underlying LOGLEVEL variable

Using Log viewer Obiee


Use the Oracle Business Intelligence Log Viewer utility (or a text editor) to view the query log. Each entry in the query log is tagged with the name of the user who issued the query, the session ID of the session in which the query was initiated, and the request ID of the individual query.To run the Log Viewer utility (which is located on Windows in \MW_HOME\ORACLE_HOME\bifoundation\server\bin\nqlogviewer.exe,open a command prompt, and enter nqlogviewer with any combination of its arguments.

The syntax is as follows:
nqlogviewer [-u user_name] [-f log_input_filename][-o output_result_filename][-s session_ID] [-r request_ID]

option in the Presentation Services Administration page.

Using OPMN in OBIEE 11g

 OPMN is installed and configured with every Oracle Application Server installation type and is essential for running Oracle Application Server.

OPMN features the following functionality:

Provides a command-line interface for process control and monitoring for single or multiple Oracle Application Server components and instances.
Provides an integrated way to manage Oracle Application Server components.
Enables management of Oracle Application Server subcomponents and sub-subcomponents.
Channels all events from different Oracle Application Server component instances to all Oracle Application Server components that can utilize them.
Solves interdependency issues between Oracle Application Server components by enabling you to start and stop components in order.
Enables customizing of enterprise functionality by using event scripts.
Enables gathering of host and Oracle Application Server process statistics and tasks.
Provides automatic restart of Oracle Application Server processes when they become unresponsive, terminate unexpectedly, or become unreachable as determined by ping and notification operations.
Provides automatic death detection of Oracle Application Server processes.
Does not depend on any other Oracle Application Server component being up and running before it can be started and used.
The OPMN server should be started as soon as possible after turning on the host. OPMN must be running whenever OPMN-managed components are turned on or off.

Using Command Prompt:
In the command prompt navigate to \instances\instance_number\bin\ (e.g. C:\OBI\instances\instance2\bin\), then execute the following commands as per your requirement.
  • To Start all OPMN processes: opmnctl startall
  • To Stop all OPMN processes: opmnctl stopall
  • To see the status of all system components: opmnctl status
startproc, stopproc, restartproc are the commands to start or stop individual processes. Here is the example to start all 5 System components individually.
  • BI Cluster Control: opmnctl startproc ias-component=coreapplication_obiccs1
  • BI Scheduler: opmnctl startproc ias-component=coreapplication_obisch1
  • BI Java Host: opmnctl startproc ias-component=coreapplication_obijh1
  • BI Presentation Services: opmnctl startproc ias-component=coreapplication_obips1
  • BI Server: opmnctl startproc ias-component=coreapplication_obis1

Validating OBIEE 11G Catalog

In OBIEE 11g it is important that we validate the catalog after upgrading the catalog from 10g so that the catalog is consistent and ready for migration to production environments.

As part of the process of validating the catalog, you include elements in the instanceconfig.xml file that run the validation when you restart Presentation Services.


The validation runs when Presentation Services starts, and Presentation Services is stopped when the validation is complete. Inconsistent accounts (such as those for deleted users), links, and objects are removed. Inconsistent users' home directory names are logged but directories are not removed.
